How do you know it’s time to replace your windows?

Q. My husband and I recently purchased a new-to-us home. When we went through the home inspection process we were told that the house needs new windows. Knowing that replacing all the windows will be a significant financial investment, how do we know if it’s really time to replace the windows or if we can wait?

A. Properly functioning windows offer comfort, pleasing aesthetics and energy efficiency. In our experience, we’ve recognized that there are three key indicators to can help you determine when it’s time to replace your windows.

1. Changes in your energy bill. If your energy bill is higher than normal, or you’re experiencing changes from month to month, your windows may not be sealed properly. Old windows can force your heating and cooling systems to work harder than usual creating a larger power draw and you will notice it in your monthly bill.

2. Sun damage on floors, walls and furniture. Old windows can fail to provide vital protection to your belongings from the sun. If there is increased or visible sun damage, it may be time to consider replacing your old windows with LowE (Low emittance) windows.

3. Noticeable drafts. If a room is considerably warmer or cooler than others, you can see movement of shades or drapes, there could be a gap or opportunity for exterior air to come into your house, and vice versa. New replacement windows can provide a reliable seal to limit or decrease air movement around your windows.

If you spot any one of these three signs, it’s time to come and talk to us. We will work with you to determine the priority areas of your home where replacement windows will be of most benefit and value, and select and size, style and design that accommodates your budget.
