Your front door is the one part of your house every visitor touches, and the one that has to survive the most abuse. Calgary gives it forty-degree temperature swings, driving snow, chinook winds and direct west sun — and most doors here were chosen for how they looked in a showroom.
Cossins Windows Ltd. has been specifying and supplying exterior doors in Calgary since 1978. We measure the opening properly, prepare your door to order with our in-house team, and install it with Cossins in-house crews.
Why entry doors fail in Calgary, and what actually fixes it
Thermal movement. A door has to open freely in July and still seal in January. Frameworks that expand and contract at different rates from the door slab will bind in one season and leak in the other. This is why material choice matters more here than almost anywhere.
Finishes that don't survive UV. Calgary gets a lot of high-altitude sun. Stains and paints that look fine in the first year can be chalked or faded by year four on a south or west exposure. The wrong door is not a door that breaks — it's a door that looks tired while still working.
Hardware that stops locking. A single latch point on an eight-foot entry system is a lot of load on one mechanism. Adjustable hardware and multi-point locking exist for a reason.
Weatherstripping compression. The seal is what makes a door weather-tight. Compression weatherstripping and an adjustable threshold are what keep the seal working after the door has settled.
Installation. A door installed without proper shimming and sealing will not perform, whatever it cost. The frame is what the door operates inside of.
Our exterior door lines
Every door is configured to your opening and your architecture. Sidelights, transoms, decorative glass, custom panel configurations and multiple handle finishes are all available.
Fibreglass entry doors — the most durable and lowest-maintenance option for Calgary's climate. Fibreglass won't warp, crack, dent or rot through the temperature swings, and it can be finished in smooth or realistic wood-grain texture that can be stained or painted to match any architectural style. Insulated polyurethane core. Available with sidelights and transoms.
Metal-clad wood entry doors — the warmth of natural wood on the interior with a protective aluminum exterior. The right answer where the door is seen from inside the house as much as from the street. Premium craftsmanship with the durability to handle Alberta's elements.
Solid wood doors — for homes where the door itself is part of the architecture. A solid wood entry door has a weight and a grain that nothing else reproduces, and in the right house it is the correct choice rather than an indulgence. Wood needs more attention than fibreglass or clad products, and we will tell you that plainly before you choose it.
French doors — classic hinged double doors opening inward or outward, available in fibreglass or metal-clad wood, with full glass panels, grilles and custom hardware.
Patio and sliding doors — PVC sliding patio doors with fusion-welded frames, and metal-clad wood sliding patio doors with warm hemlock interior frames. Custom multi-panel configurations and oversized systems.
Multi-point locking: what it actually does
Multi-point hardware is an optional upgrade that engages several locking points simultaneously along the full height of the door. Two things come from that.
Security. Load is distributed across the whole frame instead of one latch area, which makes the door substantially harder to force.
Weather-tightness. Multiple compression points along the full height pull the door evenly into its seal. A door with three or four locking points seals better than a door with one, in plain physical terms — and on a Calgary west-facing entry, that is the difference you feel in February.
What we mean by "specified to order"
Our door lines are prepared to order by our in-house team rather than built in our window manufacturing facility — we'll say that plainly, because it matters to how the project runs.
In practice it means: your door is configured to your exact requirements. Panel configuration, glass, sidelights, transoms, hardware finish, swing direction, colour. Nothing is pulled off a shelf and made to fit.
Our process
1. Private consultation. We visit your home, look at the entry and any patio doors, measure precisely, and discuss material and style options. No pressure, and no pricing until the specification is right.
2. Custom specification. Your doors are specified to your exact requirements — every detail from panel configuration to hardware finish.
3. Professional installation. Cossins in-house crews install your doors, with proper shimming, sealing and alignment.
4. Final inspection. We walk through every door with you, confirm smooth operation, proper locking and weather sealing, and stand behind the result with our warranty.
Choosing between fibreglass, metal-clad wood and solid wood
A short honest guide, because this is where most people get sold something they didn't need.
Choose fibreglass if you want the lowest maintenance and the longest service life, if your entry faces south or west and takes heavy sun, or if the door is more functional than architectural.
Choose metal-clad wood if the interior side matters as much as the exterior — if the door is seen from inside the front hall, and you want wood there. It gives you wood's warmth with an exterior that doesn't need annual attention.
Choose solid wood if the door is part of a heritage or character home and the grain, weight and profile are the point. Go in knowing wood needs periodic finishing, and that a west-facing solid wood door in Calgary will ask for more attention than either of the others.
Calgary neighbourhoods we work in
Our entry door work is concentrated in Calgary's established inner-city and estate neighbourhoods — Upper Mount Royal, Elbow Park, Rideau, Roxborough, Elboya, Britannia and Upper Scarborough — where entry systems are part of the architecture and the correct door is a specification decision rather than a catalogue pick. Older entries in these areas frequently need custom sizing, transom and sidelight configuration, and hardware chosen to suit the period of the house.
We also serve Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, Chestermere, Strathmore, High River, Bragg Creek, Langdon, Banff, Canmore and Invermere.

Common questions
How much does an entry door replacement cost in Calgary?
We don't publish pricing. Entry door cost is driven by the door material, the size and complexity of the opening, whether sidelights or transoms are involved, the glass, the hardware, and how much adjustment the existing framing needs. We measure your entry, build a specification, and price the actual project.
What is the best entry door material for Calgary's climate?
Fibreglass is the most durable and lowest-maintenance choice for Calgary — it won't warp, crack, dent or rot through the temperature swings, and it handles UV exposure well. Metal-clad wood gives you a wood interior with a protective aluminum exterior. Solid wood is the right choice where the door is part of the architecture, but it needs more ongoing finishing.
Do you supply solid wood doors?
Yes. Solid wood entry doors are one of our exterior door lines, and they remain the right answer for character and heritage homes where the grain and weight of the door are part of the design. We'll be straight with you about the maintenance they require.
What is multi-point locking, and do I need it?
Multi-point hardware is an optional upgrade that engages several locking points at once along the full height of the door. It improves both security and weather-tightness, because it pulls the door evenly into its seal. On a west- or south-facing entry in Calgary, it is a meaningful upgrade rather than a cosmetic one.
Do you replace just the door slab, or the whole door system?
We'll assess the opening and tell you honestly. Sometimes the frame is sound and the door can be replaced within it. Often, on older Calgary homes, the frame is the part that has failed and a complete system is the better long-term answer.
Can you match my existing door style and colour?
In most cases yes. We offer multiple handle styles and finishes — including brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze and matte black — along with glass and panel options. Bring us a photo and we'll tell you what's achievable.
Do you install patio and sliding doors as well?
Yes. We supply PVC sliding patio doors with fusion-welded frames and metal-clad wood sliding patio doors with warm hemlock interior frames, along with French doors and custom multi-panel configurations.
Who installs the door?
Cossins in-house installation teams install the doors we supply.
Do fibreglass doors look like wood?
Good ones do. Fibreglass doors are available in smooth or realistic wood-grain textures that can be stained or painted, so they can replicate the look of natural wood without wood's maintenance.
